Heatley Hysteria Rehash

There has been a new offer for Heatley (new being relative), this time from the Wild, and another is expected from the Avs by Tuesday). And with the Senators looking for a top four D and a second line C, all of the ‘offers’ that I listed below should be somewhat up their alley:

Wild: Dany Heatley
: Marek Zidlicky, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, 5th round pick in 2010

And as a reminder, the previous two ‘offers’ made for Heatley…

Oilers: Dany Heatley, Jason Smith
Senators: Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner, Denis Grebeshkov

and of course:

Sharks: Dany Heatley, Chris Kelly
Senators: Joe Pavelski, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, 3rd round pick*

First, I need to say that I was shocked to see that the Sharks didn’t offer a player, but rather some supporting cast. Seems pretty inconsistent from everything I have heard and what the GM has hinted at. Honestly, I can’t quite comprehend how these deals are not made up. The Shark’s cap would be decimated by the trade, unless Michalek were to be substituted for Pavelski (and in all honesty, I would rather keep Pavelski over Michalek). Not to mention trading Vlasic seems absurd with our roster; technically, he is ranked under Ehrhoff, so it would be even more appealing to the Senators to ‘upgrade’ the offer while allowing us to get rid of the Ehrhor.

Regardless, in its current form, this trade is unthinkable for the Sharks unless we are planning on moving another big name later in the off season (think Patty or Nab) for a lot in return to help fill out the roster. However, if you are a Sharks fan, it is time to face the truth; if you add Thornton, Marleau, Michalek, Boyle, and Nabokov’s contracts together, you’re paying almost $30 million for five players next year. Add Healtey and its roughly $37 million for six players. And when you are approaching a terrible year for free agency, with Pavelski and Setoguchi becoming RFAs and Marleau and Nabokov becoming UFAs, San Jose needs cap relief if they want to retain their core after next season.

So, if I were the GM and had to make the trade, I offer Michalek, Ehrhoff, and Setoguchi for Heatley, Picard, and a 2nd or something along those lines. That being said, I don’t think it will happen. I think our best bet just to field a team next year with some semblance of our core will result in Ehrhoff and Cheechoo getting the boot out of San Jose, probably for a second tier scorer and some spare parts for the 4th line. Wilson will wait until the trade deadline to think about a goaltender if necessary and Greiss will backup until then. That is unless DW thinks this is the year. And if we make this trade, it will have to be unless he pulls off a miracle, which could happen, we have a hell of a staff. Until then, I’m going to do my best to avoid getting caught up in the Heatley hysteria and try to do a little piece on a few of the departing Sharks. Look for it soon.

**I understand the clever title fails on many levels. But I couldn’t bring myself to type Heatley Hysteria reHash. It happens.
